June 3rd is National Donut Day. It honors The Salvation Army volunteers who served donuts to troops in WWI. The Salvation Army is credited with popularizing the donut in the United States through this simple act of comfort and service. By continuing to celebrate National Donut Day, we recognize those who serve our country as well as their families when they come into times of need.

Il 3 giugno è la Giornata Nazionale della Ciambella. Questa giornata onora i volontari dell'Esercito della Salvezza che servirono ciambelle alle truppe nella prima guerra mondiale. Christmas - Natale

Every year in the Town Green, the Town of Enfield prepares a huge Christmans Tree near the Gazebo (a structure used to celebrate marriages located in front of the Town Hall). The Gazebo is decorated with lights and a Christmas Tree is put in the centre of the Gazebo. Here is photos of Enfield Christmas. Below, something about this traditional celebration. Christmas is basically a Christian religious holiday. It is also a day on which families come together to share their happiness, and exchange gifts. In the days before Christmas, parties are held in schools, offices, factories, clubs, and homes. Stores are crowded with shoppers.

Cities and towns in the United States and Canada sparkle with bright lights and decorations. Churches, homes, schools, shops, and streets are decorated with Christmas trees and lots of colored lights. Store windows display gifts and Christmas scenes. The traditional colors for this holiday are red and green, and the red poinsettia is the Christmas flower. On the Christmas Eve, the President of the United States turns on the light of the Christmas tree near the White House and send his greetings to the nation.

Families prepare for this holiday for weeks. The Friday after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season when people buy gifts for each other. Some people make their gifts. They wrap them with bright paper and ribbons. They choose a tree and then decorate it with ornaments and lights. Houses are decorated with wreaths of holly, evergreens, and mistletoe. Christmas cards are sent to friends and relatives.

Santa Claus, also called "Father Christmas", is the symbol of Christmas for children. Children believe he lives at the North Pole and brings gifts for them on Christmas Eve. He flies through the air in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, and leaves gifts under the Christmas tree. Children also hang up thier stockings and Santa Claus fills them with little presents.

People wish each other a "Merry Christmas" during this holiday season. In many states, people look forward to snow and a "white Christmas". Christmas carols are sung and played on the radio and in public places during this season. There are many shows on television called "Christmas Specials". Rudoph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Miracle on 34th Street are family favorites. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is read aloud and put on as a play in many communities every year. Churches, organizations, and newspapers ask for donations of money and food for the needy. Volunteers from the Salvation Army stand outside stores collecting money for the needy. Hot meals are prepared and served to the poor and homeless. Most schools are closed for a long vacation during the Christmas season. They reopen after New Year's Day. Many families go on trips during those days. Some people to south to the beaches to enjoy the ocean and the warm weather. Other people like winter sports and go to the mountains for skiing and other winter activities. Whether people go away or stay home, they all enjoy one of the most popular celebrations of the year.

(italiano) - Ogni anno nel parchetto di fronte al comune, la citta' di Enfield allestisce un grosso albero di natale, vicino al Gazebo (una struttura usata per celebrare i matrimoni collocata di fronte al municipio). Natale e' fondamentalmente una festivita' religiosa cristiana. E' anche un giorno nel quale le famiglie si riuniscono per condividere la loro felicita' e scambiarsi doni. Il giorno prima di Natale, diverse feste sono tenute nelle scuole, uffici, fabbriche, clubs e nelle case. I negozi sono affolati di clienti.

Citta' e peasi negli Stati Uniti e Canada luccicano di luci e decorazioni. Chiese, case, scuole, negozi e strade sono decorate con alberi di Natale e molte luci colorate. Le vetrine dei negozi mostrano doni e scene natalizie. I colori tradizionali per questa festa sono il rosso eil verde e la Stella di Natale e' il fiore di Natale. La vigilia di Natale, il Presidente degli Stati Uniti accende le luci dell'albero vicino alla Casa Bianca e manda i suoi auguri alla nazione. Le famiglie si preparono a questa festa per settimane. Il venerdi' dopo il Giorno del Ringraziamento segna l'inizio del periodo degli acquisti natalizi quando le persone comprano regali per scambiarseli a vicenda. Alcune persone creano i loro regali. Gli incartano con carta luccicante e nastri. Scelgono un albero e poi lo decorano con ornamenti e luci. Le case sono decorate con ghirlande di agrifoglio, piante sempre verdi e vischio. Biglietti natalizi sono spediti ad amici e parenti.

Santa Claus, anche chiamato "Babbo Natale", e' il simbolo del natale per i bambini. I ragazzini credono che Babbo Natale vive al polo nord e gli porta i doni alla vigilia di natale. Santa Claus vola attraverso il cielo in una slitta tirata da renne e lascia i doni sotto l'albero di natalee. I bambini appendono anche le loro calze natalizie (calze appese per i doni di Babbo Natale qualcosa di simile alla calza della Befana) e Babbo Natale le riempie con piccoli doni.

Le persone si augurano a vicenda "Buon Natale" durnate il periodo natalizio. In molti stati la gente attende con ansia la neve e un "Bianco Natale". Canti di natale sono cantati e suonati sulla radio e nei posti pubblici durante questo periodo. Ci sono molti spettacoli televisivi chiamati "Christmas Speicals", in altre parole film che sono dei classici senza tempo o film di animazione comunque tutti legati al natale. Rudolph, il cucciolo dal naso rosso, Forsty il pupazzo di neve, Miracolo sulla 34 esima strada sono i favoriti dalle famiglie. Un canto di natale di Charles Dickens e' letto a voce alta e messo in scena come una commedia in molte communita' ogni anno. Chiese, oraganizzazioni e giornali chiedono donazioni di denaro e cibo per i bisognosi. Volontari appartenenti all'Esercito della Salvezza sono davanti ai supermercati per raccogliere denaro per i bisognosi. Pasti caldi sono preparati e serviti ai poveri e senza tetto.

La maggior parte delle scuole sono chiuse per la lunga vacanza durante il periodo natalizio. Queste riaprono dopo il giorno di capodanno. Molte famiglie vanno a fare gite durante quei giorni. Alcune persone vanno verso il sud, verso le spiagge per godere l'oceano e il tempo caldo. Altri apprezzano gli sport invernali e vanno sulle montagne per sciare e altre attivita' invernali. Sia che le persone vadano via sia che rimangano a casa, tutte si godono una delle piu' popolari celebrazioni dell'anno.

Civil War Monument - Monumento alla Guerra Civile

In the district of Thompsonville, near the Angelo Lamagna Activity Center, there is the Civil War Monument, in memory of the men of Enfield who on land and sea gave their lives for union and liberty 1861-1865. Click on photos to enlarge them.

Erected by the Town of Enfield, Connecticut A.D. 1885, also World War I memory of those who gave their lives 1917-1919, placed on 1922. The monument is just located in front of Freshwater Pond, small lake beside the Fire Department Station in Thompsonville.

Costruito dal Comune di Enfield, citta' dello stato del Connecticut, nel 1885 dopo cristo, e' anche memoria della prima guerra mondiale per quelli che diedero le loro vite fra il 1917 e il 1919, con memoria collocata sul monumento nel 1922. Il monumento e' localizzato di fronte al laghetto chiamato Freshwater Pond, accanto alla stazione dei pompieri di Thompsonville.

Kings Island boat launch - L'attracco di Kings Island

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) owns and/or operates over 110 boat launches statewide on ponds, lakes, rivers and Long Island Sound (for more information about Long Island Sound click on this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_Sound). These launches are designed for trailered and/or cartop use. Unless noted otherwise in the Connecticut Boater's Guide, all launches are open to the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each launch has a signboard with important information including rules and regulations. The use of state boat launches is restricted under state law and federal guidelines to fishing, launching and retrieval of boats, and observing wildlife from designated platforms. Any other activities are illegal. Many popular sites offer seasonal toilet facilities, however, no trash receptacles are provided and it requests that patrons "carry out what they carry in". In Enfield a boat launch is located in a locality called Kings Island, on the Connecticut River. In paritcular this is located one mile northwest of junction of U.S. 5 and I-91, West on Bridge Lane to Parson Road. Launch is on the right. This boat launch doesn't have docks but it has a parking area for 20 cars with parking surface in gravel, a seasonal chemical toilet (handicapped toilet), a ramp in concrete plank which leads to Connecticut River, and a turning area in gravel. The acces road is in paved and leads to Parson road when you are going through to get out. Nature and animals (ducks, gooses and gulls) are the background and environment around this boat launch.

In Enfield un attracco e' localizzato nella localita' chiamata Kings Island, sul fiume Connecticut River. In particolare questo e' localizzato a un chilometro e mezzo circa a nordest del congiungimento fra la route 5 e la Interstatale 91, prendendo la direzione ovest sulla Bridge Lane fino a Parson Road. L'attracco e' sulla destra. Questo attracco non ha banchine ma ha un'area di parcheggio per 20 auto con la superfice di parcheggio in ghiaia, un

bagno chimico stagionale (bagno attrezzato per l'uso da parte di portatori di handicap), una rampa in tavolato di calcestruzzo che porta al Connecticut River e un'area di svolta in ghiaia. La strada di accesso e' in asfalto e porta alla Parson Road quando si sta attraversando per uscire. La natura e gli animali (anatre, oche e gabbiani) sono lo sfondo e l'ambiente intorno a questo attracco.

Thanksgiving Day - Il Giorno del Ringraziamento

Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a holiday celebrated throughout the United States. People of all faiths celebrate this day because this holiday is not connected with a particular religion. They give thanks for the many blesssings in their lives. This is a family holiday. Families come together from far and near. In some places special religious services are held in the morning. Then comes the traditional feast. Turkey is the main dish. It is served with sweet potatoes, squash, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Apple cider is the drink of the day. Click on photo to enlarge it.

Football is the popular game on this day. For many schools, the Thanksgiving Day game is the most important one of the year and in Enfield a game between Enfield High School (Raiders) and Enrico Fermi High School (Falcons) takes place every year (the two High Schools in Enfield) . Usually there are several football games to watch on TV.

Macy's departement store holds its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Celebrities, floats (trucks hidden with decoration), bands, and huge balloons shaped like famous strorybook and cartoon characters appear in the parade. Santa Claus arrives at the end. His coming marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Stores, classrooms, and homes are decorated with pictures of turkey, Pilgrims, and Indians, and with wreaths of dried flowers and vegetables. Horns of plenty are also very popular. Charitable organizations serve dinners to needy people. They also send baskets of food to the elderly and sick.

The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. They came from England for religious freedom. They sailed from Plymouth, England, on Septtember 16, 1620. Their ship was called the Mayflower. They landed at Plymouth Rock, in Massachusetts, on December 26, 1620.

The first winter was a terrible time. There was much sickness and starvation. Native American Indians taught the Pilgrims how to plant, fish, and hunt - how to survive in America. The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the Pilgrims had a great harvest. They were very thankful and decided to celebrate with a feast. The Pilgrims invited their Indian friends to share this Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving was proclaimed a national day of observance by Congress in 1941.

(italiano) - Il Giorno del Ringraziamento arriva il quarto giovedi' di novembre. E' una vacanza celebrata in ogni parte degli Stati Uniti. Persone di tutte le fedi celebrano questo giorno poiche' questa vacanza non e' connessa con una particolare religione. Gli americani rendono grazia per i tanti doni presenti nelle loro vite. Questa e' una vacanza della famiglia. Famiglie provienti da tutte le parti si riuniscono per questa occasione. In acluni posti appositi cerimonie religiose sono tenute al mattino. E' servito con: sweet potatoes (un particolare tipo di patate di colore arancione), squash (un ortaggio che assomiglia a una piccola zucca), cranberry sauce (un condimento al mirtillo) e la torta di zucca. Il Football e' il popolare incontro della giornata. Per molte scuole, la partita del Giorno del Ringraziamento e' la piu' importante dell'anno e nella citta' di Enfield ogni anno ha luogo una partita tra la Enfield High School (la cui squadra e' nominata Raiders) e la Enrico Fermi High School (il nome della sua squadra e' Falcons) , le due uniche scuole superiori presenti in Enfield (la partita si volge oggi 27 novembre). Generalmente ci sono diverse partite di football da guradare in televisione.

Macy's (una fra le piu' famose catene di negozi negli Stati Uniti) tiene la sua parata del Giorno del Ringraziamento nella citta' di New York. Celebrita', carri allegorici, bande ed enormi palloni con le sembianze di personaggi dei libri di storie e dei cartoni animati compaiono nella parata.
Santa Claus, per intenderci Babbo Natale, compare alla fine. La sua venuta segna l'inizio del periodo degli acquisti natalizi. I negozi, le classi nelle scuole, le case sono decorate con immagini del tacchino, dei pellegrini e degli indiani e con corone di fiori secchi e ortaggi. Sono anche molto popolari le cornucopie, corni riempiti in genere con cibo. Organizzazioni caritatevoli servono cene alle persone bisognose. Queste organizzazioni inviano anche cesti di cibo alle persone anziane e ammalate.

Il primo Giorno del Ringraziamento fu celebrato dai Pellegrini nel 1621. Questi vennero dall'Inghilterra per la liberta' religiosa. I Pellegrini salparono da Plymouth, Inghilterra, il 16 settembre del 1620. La loro imbarcazione fu chiamata Mayflower. Gli stessi sbarcarono a Plymouth Rock, nello stato del Massachusetts, il 26 dicembre 1620. Il primo inverno fu un periodo terribile. Ci furono molte persone ammalate e fame. Gli indiani nativi americani insegnarono i Pellegrini come piantare colture, pescare e cacciare - in altre parole come sopravvivere in America. I raccolti furono buoni e nell'autunno del 1621 i Pellegrini ebbero un eccelente stagione di raccolta. Loro furono molto contenti e grati e decisero di celebrare questo momento con una festa. I Pellegrini invitarono i loro amici, gli indiani d'America nativi del luogo, per condividere questa festa di Ringraziamento. Il Giorno del Ringraziamento fu proclamato un giorno nazionale di celebrazionedal Congresso nel 1941.

Senior Center - Centro Anziani

The Senior Center (High Street in Enfield), formerly The United Presbyterian Church, was purchased by the Town of Enfield in the early 1970's. Many seniors come to the Center for fellowship, medical services, meals, etc.

This building is also used by a Theatre group, Gold Tone Senior Singers, and other related activities. Click on photos to enlarge them.

(italiano) - Il Centro Anziani (collocato in High Street in Enfield), in passato chiesa presbiteriana chiamata United Presbyterian Church, fu acquistata dal Comune di Enfield nei primi anni settanta. Molti anziani vanno al Centro per fare amicizia, per servizi medici, pasti ed ecc.

Alvin D. Higgins School - Scuola Alvin D. Higgins

The Alvin D. Higgins School was named for the Hartford Carpet Company agent who provided the land on which was originally built in 1914. The size of the school doubled in 1921 when an exact duplicate of the original school was added to the east end on the building.

The 32,000-square-foot Higgins School, which opened in 1917, was closed in 1979, when the town's student population declined. It was closed for good in 2000, after being used as town offices for a while. Recently the Town of Enfield is struggling with the question if there can be a second life for the old school building. Enfield is seeking proposals from private developers. One possibility was to use this building for the Fire Department, which in this moment is located in a building on Pearl Street, but the Town denied this request. (italiano) - La Scuola Alvin D. Higgins fu messa al nome del rappresentante dell'azienda Hartford Carpet Company, che forni' il terreno sul quale fu originariamente costruita nel 1914. La Dimensione della scuola raddopio' nel 1921, quando un esatto duplicato della scuola originaria fu aggiunto all'estremita' est dell'edificio. Veterans Day - Il giorno dei veterani

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th. It is a day to remember and honor all those Americans who served in the armed forces, and particularly those who fought during the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf Wars. People also remember the soldiers who are missing in action (MIA). This day reminds people of the courage and patriotism of all men and women who serve their country. Veterans Day is observed with ceremonies at war monuments and cemeteries throughout the nation. Almost every village has a monument to veterans who served in one of the country's wars.

It is a day when many people visit national monuments such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, D.C. Veterans groups organize barbecues, picnics, and dances. Store sales are very popular on this holiday.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day so Americans would not forget the tragedies of war. Great Britain and France also celebrate this day to commemorate the end of fighting of World War I on November 11th, 1918. On November 11th, 1921, the body of an American soldier killed in World War I was buried in the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. On the tomb are these words: "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God." Since then, unknown soldiers from more recent wars have also been buried at the tomb, now called the Tomb of the Unknowns.

A law enacted in 1938 made the day a federal holiday. In 1954 Congress changed the name to Veterans Day to honor all United States veterans. It is also a day dedicated to world peace.

E' un giorno per ricordare e honorare tutti quegli americani che prestarono servizio nelle forze armate, e in particolare quelli che combatterono durante la guerra tra la Spagna e gli Stati Uniti, la prima e la seconda guerra mondiale, la guerra di Corea, la guerra del Vietnam e la guerra del Golfo. Le gente ricordano anche i soldati che sono dispersi in azioni militari (MIA - missing in action). Questa giornata ricorda alle gente il coraggio e il patriottismo di tutti gli uomini e le donne che servono il loro paese. Il Giorno dei Veterani e' celebrato con cerimonie presso i monumenti commemorativi i caduti in guerra e cimiteri in tutta la nazione. I gruppi di veterani organizzano barbecues, picnics e balli. Saldi nei negozi sono molto popolari in questo giorno di vacanza.

Halloween

Halloween is a festival celebrated on October 31st and it's always on October 31st. The name of the holiday means "hallowed" or "holy evening" because it happens the day before All Saints Day. It is said that Halloween is the children's New Year's Eve. They dress up with special costumes, they eat too much, and stay up too late celebrating.

Children go around the neighborhood dressed in masks, and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches, ghosts, skeletons, and popular TV, movie, and storybook characters (i.e. Frankestein). Some cosutmes are homemade; others are bought in stores. The children go door-to-door saying "Trick or treat". People give them candy, cookies, fruit, or money. Sometimes money is collected to help UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund).

Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black. Usual decorations are jack-o-lanterns and colorful pictures of witches, black cats, ghosts, and skeletons. Jack-o-lanterns are pumpkins that are carved to look like faces. They are placed on doorway entrances and in windows. Horror movies and ghost stories are shown on TV on this day.

Adults and older children also celebrate Halloween with parades, festivals, and costume parties. Some people create their costumes; other people rent them. At some parties, there are contests, and the best costume receives a prize. One of the party events popular with children is bobbing for apples. Apples are put in tubs filled with water. People try to get the apples using only their mouths; hands cannot be used.

Halloween comes the day before "All Saints Day". Many superstitions are connected with this day. The Druids, a group of priests from Gaul and Britain, believed that ghosts, spirits, and witches came out to harm people on Halloween. It is because of this legend that people place jack-o-lanterns and scary decorations in front of their homes to scare evil spirits away. The Druids also thought that cats were scared. They believed that they were once humans who were changed into animals because they did evil things. That is why black cats are part of Halloween. It is also believed that the pumpkin symbolizes the human skull.

(Italiano) - Halloween e' una festa celebrata il 31 di ottobre ed e' sempre il 31 del mese di ottobre, non ha importanza in quale giorno della settimana cade. Il nome della vacanza significa "sacro" o "notte sacra" poiche' questa cade il giorno prima della festa di tutti i santi.

Si dice che Halloween e' la vigilia del nuovo anno dei bambini. I ragazzini si travestono con speciali costumi, mangiano molto (e troppo) e rimando in piedi fino a tardi per le celebrazioni.
I bambini vanno a trovare i vicini travestiti con machere e costumi colorati. I costumi piu' comuni sono quelli da strega, da fantasma, da sceletro e dei personaggi popolari della televisione, del cimena o film e dei libri. Alcuni costumi sono fatti in casa; altri sono acquistati in negozio. I ragazzini vanno di porta in porta dicendo "Dolcetto o Scherzetto". La gente gli da' dolcetti, biscotti, frutta o denaro. Talvolta il denaro e' raccolto per aiutare l'UNICEF.

Le case, i negozie e le classi sono decorate nei tradizionali colori di Halloween, l'arancione e il nero. Consuete decorazioni sono le laterne chiamate jack-o-lanterns e colorati disegni di streghe, gatti neri, fantasmi e scheletri. Jack-o-lanterns sono delle zucche intagliate in modo da assomigliare a delle facce. Queste sono collocate nei vani di entrata delle abitazioni e sulle finestre. Film dell'orrore e storie di fantasmi sono trasmesse alla televisione in questo particolare giorno.

Gli adulti e i ragazzini piu' grandi celebrano Halloween anche con parate, festeggiamenti e feste con costumi. Alcune persone creano i loro costumi; altri gli affittano. In alucune feste, ci sono concorsi e il miglior costume riceve un premio. Uno degli eventi in queste feste, popolari per i bambini, e' la pesca delle mele. Le mele sono messe in una tinozza riempita d'acqua. Le persone provano a prendere le mele usando solamente la bocca; le mani non posso essere usate.

Halloween viene il giorno prima della Festa di tutti i Santi. Molti superstizioni sono legate a questo giorno. I Druidi, un gruppo di preti provenienti dalla Gallia e dalla Britania, credevano che i fantasmi, gli spiriti e le streghe venivanovenissero fuori per nuocere le gente il giorno di Halloween. E' a causa di questa leggenda che le persone metteno le jack-o-lanterns e decorazioni che incutono paura di fronte alle loro case, giusto per mettere in fuga gli spiriti malvagi. I Druidi pensavano anche che i gatti fossero sacri. Questi credevano che questi animali fossero un volta esseri umani, che furono trasformati in animali poiche' questi fecero cose malvagie. Questo e' il motivo per cui i gatti neri sono parte di Halloween. E' anche creduto che la zucca simboleggi il cranio umano.

Located on Route 5 in Enfield, at 739 Enfield Street, this place has great Italian pastries, cookies and cakes. The items are always fresh and the slection is great. They have all kinds of breads and cookies and pastries. They have cannolis (a large variety of cannolis. There must be at least 12 kinds!), loafs of fresh bread (made daily) and pizza and you can buy a cup of cappucino. They have a giant parking so parking is not an issue. Their hours are convenient. And, they always have everything you could want in stock, so stopping by at the last moment is not an issue. I loro orari sono comodi. E hanno sempre qualcosa che potresti voler comprare, cosi' fermarsi all'ultimo momento non e' un problema. Established as the township of Enfield, 1683, this area war part of the Springfield Plantation granted to William Pynchon and others by Massachusetts General Court. Springfield was settled in 1636, but no effectual grants were made here until after king Philip's war of 1675-1676.

In 1679 John Pease and his brother Robert of Salem, Massachusetts, visited the land and spent the winter alone in a hut on the hillside of the present Enfield Street Cemetery. The next spring, 1680, they removed their families along with those of their father John Pease Sr. and Elisha Kibbe to Freshwater Plantation. The Town of Enfield, Connecticut, is a suburb located in Hartford County, eighteen miles north of Hartford, Connecticut and eight miles south of Springfield, Massachusetts. Enfield was named and incorporated by the Colony of Massachusetts in 1683 and annexed to Connecticut in 1749. The town is 33.8 square miles with a current population of approximately 45,246.

Enfield's Town Seal is in the shape of a shield, enclosed in a double circle with a compass like border. At the very top, the year the town was named and incorporated by the Colony of Massachusetts. The town name, Enfield, is inscribed in a scroll contained within the double circles and border, under the year.

The shield is under the scroll, within the circles and border. At the top of the shield is a five point crown, the trademark of Hallmark Cards Inc. Directly below the crown, within the shield, is a pile of cannon balls with a keg of gunpowder on each side, representing the Hazard Powder Company, a manufacturer of gunpowder during the Civil War. A three-bladed propeller is on either side of the powder kegs symbolizing the Crestline Boat Company, a subsidiary of the Bigelow Sanford Company. The Bigelow Sanford Company trademark, a weaver's knot tied by a pair of hands on a pedestal, represents the nation's largest carpet manufacturing company at the time. A tobacco plant flanks each side of the trademark depicting the Tobacco Valley in which the town is located. A star on each side of the shield, centered within the double circles and the border, stands for the Colony of Massachusetts and the Colony of Connecticut. A bottom scroll is inscribed with the state name, Connecticut.
