The Alvin D. Higgins School was named for the Hartford Carpet Company agent who provided the land on which was originally built in 1914. The size of the school doubled in 1921 when an exact duplicate of the original school was added to the east end on the building.
The 32,000-square-foot Higgins School, which opened in 1917, was closed in 1979, when the town's student population declined. It was closed for good in 2000, after being used as town offices for a while. Recently the Town of Enfield is struggling with the question if there can be a second life for the old school building. Enfield is seeking proposals from private developers. One possibility was to use this building for the Fire Department, which in this moment is located in a building on Pearl Street, but the Town denied this request. (italiano) - La Scuola Alvin D. Higgins fu messa al nome del rappresentante dell'azienda Hartford Carpet Company, che forni' il terreno sul quale fu originariamente costruita nel 1914. La Dimensione della scuola raddopio' nel 1921, quando un esatto duplicato della scuola originaria fu aggiunto all'estremita' est dell'edificio. La Scuola Higgins di 2.973 metri quadrati, che apri' nel 1917, fu chiusa nel 1979 quando la popolazione degli studenti diminui'. La scuola fu chiusa definitivamente, dopo essere stata usata come uffici del Comune per un po' di tempo.
Recentemente la citta' di Enfield si sta ponendo il problema se ci possa essere una seconda vita per il vecchio edificio scolastico. Enfield sta cercando proposte provenienti da operatori privati. Una possibilita' fu di usare l'edificio per ospitare i vigili del fuoco, che attualmente sono localizzati in un palazzo in Peal Street, ma il Comune nego' l'autorizzazione.
